Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) Assessment

The Assessment Process

A comprehensive neurodevelopmental assessment typically takes place over approximately 2-3 sessions, lasting around 90 minutes each. Please note that on some occasions, further clinical assessments may be required to fully understand the needs of an individual and reach a final decision around diagnosis. This could include a school observation or an assessment of cognitive functioning (e.g., learning or thinking skills). You would be kept informed throughout the assessment process and will be able to share any queries or concerns with us. The assessment would take place with two clinicians.

Screening and History Taking

During this part of the assessment, you will have the chance to share your concerns, whilst we aim to gather a detailed developmental history of your child. The session is for key family members or carers, without the young person present. We will also ask parents or carers and school to complete some screening questionnaires. The young person may also be required to complete some self-report measures, depending on their age. A mental health screen will also be included as part of the assessment process. This will help us decide whether further assessment and intervention is required. This aspect of the assessment could take place in person or online.

Structured Observational Assessment

If further assessment is indicated, an assessment session will be held with the young person and 2 clinicians. For younger children, parents or carers may be required to sit in with the child during the assessment. This involves an observational assessment of the young person using a standardised structured assessment called the The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-Second Edition (ADOS-2). This is an activity-based assessment administered by trained clinicians to evaluate communication skills, social interaction, and imaginative use of materials in individuals who are suspected to have autism spectrum condition (ASC). This session would take place in person. We will then meet as a team to discuss the information gathered and reach a consensus regarding a decision. At this point, further assessments may be indicated and this will be discussed with you.

Feedback

The third aspect of assessment will involve the family and young person to meet with the team to discuss and feedback the results. The outcome of the ASC assessment will be shared and you will have the opportunity to ask questions and share your thoughts. A full diagnostic report will also be written and shared. We will also direct you to useful resources to enhance your understanding of ASC. This aspect of the assessment could take place in person or online.

Psycho-education Sessions

In addition to the assessment, young people and parents/carers and/or schools can be provided with helpful psycho-education about ASC or associated difficulties. This will help to learn about and develop your understanding of ASC, alongside some recommendations for supporting young people with an ASC diagnosis. These additional sessions would not be included in the fee for the neurodevelopmental assessment and would come at an additional cost. Please see the fees page for further information.
